But there are also some aspects of Luxembourg which aren’t expensive, such as the free public transport as the most obvious example.

So while some things are expensive and some things aren’t, things pretty much balance out and in terms of visiting Luxembourg, I found it was pretty much the same as anywhere else in Western Europe.

To be honest, before visiting Luxembourg for myself, I was expecting it to be super expensive as it’s the richest country in the world.

I’ve never lived in Luxembourg so maybe it’s more expensive to live there than it is to visit. I’m guessing the cost of housing, cars, etc. must be high. Pretty much every car I saw in Luxembourg City was electric.

How Much Is Accommodation In Luxembourg?

When visiting Luxembourg, it’s best to stay in Luxembourg City. It can be confusing having the city called the same thing as the country, I know, but in the city is where the most restaurants, hotels, etc. are.

And since the public transport is free throughout the whole country, you can still visit the likes of Vianden Castle while staying in the city.

In terms of how much it’s going to cost, like everywhere in the world, it depends on what type of accommodation you’re going to stay in.

For the budget-conscious traveler, like myself, a night in a hostel or a basic hotel or Airbnb could cost between 25 to 70 euros.

If you’re looking for something a bit more upscale, with additional comforts and services, expect to pay somewhere in the ballpark of 100 to 200 euros per night for a mid-range hotel.

And for those seeking the lap of luxury, the finest hotels in Luxembourg typically start at around 200 euros per night, with the price climbing for premium options.

Personally, I recommend the Il Piccolo Mondo. It’s a nice mid-range hotel with comfy rooms, and affordable prices. When visiting Luxembourg, you’re probably not going to spend too long in your room anyway, it’s not the country you visit to relax by the pool!

So remember, all you need is somewhere to sleep at night, and location in the city doesn’t matter as transport is free.

But in terms of price, you’ll see it’s pretty much in-line with other destinations in Europe.

How Much Are Tourist Attractions In Luxembourg?

Most of the sights in Luxembourg City are completely free to see, such as the Palais Grand-Ducal and Constitution Square.

Not to mention how many beautiful views there are in Luxembourg such as in Grund, or from the free Panoramic Elevator of Pfaffenthal.

The only tourist attractions you really have to pay for in Luxembourg are Bock Casemates, the museums, and of course the castles.

But I didn’t find them to be particularly expensive.

Vianden Castle, for example, is €10 for an adult ticket. Not a bad deal at all.

We even used student discount to get in for €5 each!

So all in all, the tourist attractions in Luxembourg aren’t very expensive.

How Expensive Is Food In Luxembourg?

Food is probably the thing I found most expensive in Luxembourg.

For example, we ate in a Pizza Hut and had one pizza between two of us with two bottles of water and it came to €23!

But it is still possible to find cheap food in Luxembourg. There are lots of Lidls and other budget supermarkets where you can find croissants for cheap for lunch, or if you have a kitchenette, you can even make full meals to save money.

I would say on average, a meal cost €18-25 per person. Because that pizza example I gave, it’s only really a meal for one person. We just weren’t very hungry that day.

One thing that did annoy me about Luxembourg is that you always had to pay for water. There weren’t many places to fill up my water bottle, so I always had to just buy a new bottle.

And although it’s not too expensive in shops, restaurants charge inflated prices for water because it comes in a glass bottle.

So as I said, food and drink is the most expensive part about Luxembourg.

How Much Is Public Transport In Luxembourg?

Public transport in Luxembourg is completely free!

It’s one of the biggest perks about visiting the country. Trains, buses, trams, everything is completely free.

The only transport you have to pay for is first class, but I personally don’t see any point.

You can get anywhere in the country using the public transport. During my trip to Luxembourg, my girlfriend and I took two trips outside of the city to Vianden Castle and Bourscheid Castle, which are both about one hour outside of Luxembourg City, and the journeys were all free.

Not to mention how much we used the transport in the city itself. It’s great! And it helps to balance out how much you spend on a trip to Luxembourg.

I also found it to be very prompt and reliable, and it was never even that busy, except in the city during the morning and evening rush, of course.
