Are there alligators in Tampa?

If you’re looking for a quick answer to this question, then yes, there are alligators in Tampa.

Alligators are found all across Florida, they’re found in all of the 67 counties. Including Hillsborough County, where you will find Tampa.

Although you most likely won’t find any alligators in downtown Tampa, they are definitely in the suburbs.

As the saying goes, if there’s a body of water in Florida, there’s an alligator in it. And this applies to Tampa too. There are alligators everywhere in Florida, from Jacksonville which is over 3 hours away or just a short drive from Orlando to Tampa away. There are alligators no matter where you are.

There are lots of reports of Tampa suburb residents finding alligators in their pools for example.

But if you are sticking to Tampa Bay and downtown Tampa, the chances are you won’t even see a gator. If you’re staying in a suburb, just don’t go swimming in any open water and you’ll be fine too. Alligator attacks out of the water are extremely rare.

But to answer the question, yes, there are alligators in Tampa.

How many alligators are there in Tampa?

There has never been a statistic counting the number of alligators in Tampa, as far as I can see online anyway.

But there are 1.25 million gators in Florida, making them pretty common, and finding them in bodies of water in Tampa is just as common as anyway. Except for the Everglades, of course.

As I said though, it’s unlikely that you will ever encounter an alligator, unless you go looking for one. Don’t go near open bodies of water and you won’t have a problem.

What type of alligator is found in Tampa?

There is only one type of alligator native to Florida, and that is the American Alligator. A fitting name, right?

It’s one of only two native crocodilian species, with the other being the American Crocodile. The names are so creative!

Like with gators, you may spot a croc in the suburbs of Tampa, but it’s unlikely you’ll find one chilling outside the Rivergate Tower. They tend to live more in the south of Florida so you more than likely will not see a crocodile in Tampa.

Where to see alligators in Tampa

As I’ve said throughout this article, you can find alligators in pretty much any body of water throughout Florida. But I strongly advise against exploring an open body of water to find gators, that’s how you provoke an attack.

There are lots of opportunities to see gators near Tampa both in the wild and in captivity.

Some popular viewing spots include Sawgrass Lake Park, Weedon Island Preserve and Honeymoon Island. You can see wild gators from a safe distance at all of these locations.

Of course, there is Zoo Tampa where you can see gators, crocs and hundreds of other animal species.

Alternatively, make the 90-minute trip to Wild Florida, in my opinion, the best animal park in Florida, much better than Busch Gardens and Gatorworld. My full Wild Florida review gives more information on all of the alligators and other animals which you can find here. You can see wild gators through an airboat ride and feed gators in their gator park!

It’s the best alligator tours in Florida, no doubt about it.

Are there alligators in Tampa Bay?

Although alligators are found across Tampa, you won’t find them in Tampa Bay. Alligators live in freshwater, and the sea is salt water, meaning that alligators most likely won’t be something you see during a day at the beach.

There are sharks at Clearwater Beach though, but don’t worry, you probably won’t see one of them either.

The reason that you find alligators in open bodies of water across Florida is because the water is inland, and is freshwater. Alligators can survive in Saltwater for a few hours, but it’s not their normal habitat. Meaning that you are unlikely to find them in Tampa Bay.

So to clarify, you can find alligators in suburbs and open water, but not in Tampa Bay itself.

Is it safe to swim in Tampa Bay?

There’s varying advice on whether it’s safe to swim in Tampa Bay itself. It’s the most shark-dense area in the world for starters, and the conditions are often choppy and unsafe.

Sure, there are some beaches and you may see a few people swimming in the bay, but there are much nicer (and safer) beaches just 15-20 miles down the road towards the Gulf.

Here you can find lots of famous beaches like Clearwater Beach, Sand Key Park and Bellaire Beach.

These make for much nicer swimming conditions, and are nicer beaches too, for the most part. So while you can technically swim in Tampa Bay, you may as well opt for one of the nicer beaches just a short journey down the highway.
