Is Hamburg Safe?
To sum this article up in one sentence: Yes, Hamburg is safe. Really safe actually, it’s one of the cities in which I have felt the safest anywhere in the world.
But don’t just take my word for it. Hamburg is rated highly safe to walk around in during the day. The crime stats are also low-moderate.
Naturally, this makes Hamburg one of the safest cities in Germany, only second to Berlin, the capital.
The people of Hamburg, known as Hamburgers (no- you can’t eat them!) are very welcoming and kind people. They take real pride in their city and are happy to help and direct tourists without hesitation.

Germany, and Hamburg in particular, are very strict on following the rules. For example, you shouldn’t cross the road until the pedestrian light is green, even if there are no cars on the road.
Top tip: In Germany, cars drive on the right of the road.
This attitude towards following rules, discipline, etc. makes Hamburg a really safe city to visit.
I got a real sense of safety in Hamburg. Compared to other European cities which often feel unsafe, some even dangerous, Hamburg is the complete opposite.
So yes, Hamburg is safe and you can visit the city without having any safety concerns.
Is Hamburg Safe At Night?
Some cities are safe by day but dangerous by night. Hamburg is not one of these cities. No matter what time of day it is, day or night, Hamburg is safe.
It was actually nighttime when I arrived in Hamburg, about 11 pm. It was dark and there were few people around, yet I still felt safe.
There’s an aura throughout the city that allows you to relax and forget about safety concerns. That’s not to say you shouldn’t still take personal safety seriously.

But throughout my 3 days in Hamburg, I was walking around the city at night on a few occasions and I felt completely safe each time. I didn’t feel less safe at night than during the day. Hamburg is just a safe city.
Of course, my opinion and experiences may differ from other people’s experiences, but I am just here to share my view.
So is Hamburg safe at night? Yes, it is.
Is Hamburg Safe For Solo Travel?
This was a question I had too before visiting Hamburg. It’s not exactly a city famous for backpackers or solo travellers. Is Hamburg safe for solo travel?
The answer is yes, it definitely is. And not only is Hamburg safe for solo travellers, but it’s also an amazing city for solo travellers.
Hamburg is worth visiting as a solo traveller without a doubt. The attractions mean you can meet new people really easily. There are free tour groups where you can meet people. And there are also some really good hostels in Hamburg too.
I recommend the A&O Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. It’s affordable, sociable and in a great location too.

Another reason Hamburg is so great is that a lot of the most touristy spots are very close together, meaning they are all within walking distance. This is great for solo travellers who are also travelling on a budget.
And as Hamburg is so safe, you can walk anywhere at any time of day and feel completely at ease. It’s such a safe city that you are no less safe on your own than you would be in a group.
To summarise, Hamburg is safe for solo travellers, and it’s also a really good city for travelling solo too.
Is Hamburg Safe For Females?
While I am not a female myself, I can say that my girlfriend has also visited Hamburg and had no safety concerns whatsoever.
As I have made clear throughout this article, Hamburg is a very welcoming city and it’s completely safe for anyone and everyone. Whether you are male or female, in a group or solo, German or foreign, it doesn’t matter. Hamburg is safe.

How To Stay Safe In Hamburg
Even though Hamburg is a safe city, I cannot personally guarantee your safety. So it’s important that you always take personal safety seriously and look after yourself.
Hamburg has no specific safety concerns, so to stay safe you should just use common sense and follow standard personal safety rules, such as:
- Don’t flash your valuables or expensive items, especially near a road
- Keep your bag close to you when walking or sitting in a cafe etc.
- Don’t get drunk on your own or with people you don’t trust to get you back home
- Be aware of pickpockets and petty crime – although these aren’t too bad in Hamburg
- Be aware of scams – again, these are pretty uncommon in Hamburg
- Learn the emergency services number: 112 in Germany

You may also wish to purchase travel insurance to insure you are covered throughout the duration of your trip to Hamburg. I can personally recommend using SafetyWing. It covers both medical and travel expenses so you can enjoy your trip with complete peace of mind.
Things To Know Before Travelling To Hamburg
Before visiting any city, you’ll want to know the best tips and tricks, right? The good news for you is that I have visited Hamburg and have 9 amazing tips you should know.
- Wait to cross the road – Hamburg citizens, and Germans in general, are very strict when it comes to rules. Wait for the green pedestrian light to show before crossing. Don’t cross the road at a red light, even if the road is clear. You have to wait your turn.
- Some crossings are automatic – Not every crossing has a button to press to let the lights know you want to cross. Some are automatic and you simply wait for the green pedestrian man to appear.
- You can drink tap water – The tap water in Hamburg is safe to drink and you can save money by not buying bottled water.
- Most things close on a Sunday – Sunday is the day of rest for Hamburg and most things will be closed. If you visit over a Sunday, you too should take a day to rest and relax.

- REWE is the best shopping market – REWE is the best shop for groceries in Hamburg. You can get really cheap (but delicious) groceries here. As well as pick up some famous German brands like Haribo and Kinder.
- Get the train from the airport – The best way to get from Hamburg Airport to Hamburg HBF (Central Station) is by getting the train. It costs just less than €4 and takes about 30 minutes.
- Be weather prepared – Hamburg’s weather changes a lot throughout the year. If you visit in Winter, make sure to wrap up warm. If you visit in Summer, make sure to bring swimwear.
- 3 days is the perfect amount of time – If you are wondering how many days in Hamburg are enough, the answer is 3 days. It allows you to see the sights and have time to explore the city for yourself.
- Time your visit at St. Nikolai Memorial & St. Michel’s Church – You can get 2 free concerts in Hamburg by visiting these 2 landmarks at the right times. The bells of St. Nikolai and the organs of St. Michel’s make for great listening.
