Pizzeria Portas, Split: 2025 Restaurant Review & Tips
Considering a meal at Pizzeria Portas?
You’ve come to the right place as I’ve enjoyed a meal at the restaurant and eaten in other places in Split so I can compare it with other options.
Before eating at a restaurant, I always look for a review to see what it’s like, and I imagine you’ve stumbled here because that’s what you’re doing for Pizzeria Portas.
That’s why I’ve written an in-depth review of my meal, but if you want the short answer, I recommend it highly.
Pizzeria Portas Review
If you don’t have time to read the whole review, I’ll summarise my time in Pizzeria Portas in one sentence: it’s tasty Italian food in a good location with a pretty setting and affordable prices.
So in other words, it ticks all the boxes as the staff are friendly too.
I’ll go as far as saying it’s my favourite restaurant in Split, and there are some great restaurant options.
When I had a meal at Pizzeria Portas, it was with my girlfriend while we were backpacking as a couple in Croatia. We visited in September with no reservation and we got a table immediately with no wait- I’m not sure if it gets busier in July and August, but I imagine it would.
I read some reviews online from this period that say you can typically wait up to 10 minutes for a table in the summer months. In my opinion, it’s worth the short wait.
While Croatia is still pretty affordable to visit, the prices have gone up in the last few years thanks to natural increases, the cost of living going up, and the introduction of the Euro. But I was still happy with the prices at the restaurant and I thought they were quite reasonable.
If you are interested in having a pasta dish or some other Italian meal other than pizza, then you won’t find anything here. The restaurant lives up to its name and only serves pizza, with the exception of a few salad options.
That being said, there are a good amount of pizza choices on the menu, with lots of different toppings to choose from.

But I felt like eating a plain Margherita the night I was eating at Pizzeria Portas. I know it sounds plain, but if you ask an Italian, they will tell you it’s the only true form of pizza!
After a short wait of around 10 minutes, my pizza arrived and it smelt amazing.
As you can see from the photo above, it looks pretty tasty too, right? Well, I can assure you it was delicious and I ate every last slice.
The best part is it was only €11, which is more expensive than Rome to be fair, but it’s still a good deal for being in the touristy part of Split in my opinion (it is in Split Old Town). I saw restaurants charging a lot more!
On top of the good food and good prices, the restaurant has a really nice vibe to it. We chose to sit outside which is an array of tables underneath a canopy of green leaves surrounded by old brick walls and a charming black fence.
It makes for a really unique and quaint setting and it was really nice. It was actually in Pizzeria Portas where my girlfriend took this photo of me, which I now use as a portrait photo on many platforms, including the author box if you scroll down to the bottom of this post.

Cool background though, isn’t it?
I recommend eating here 100%, and for the record, I am in no way associated with the restaurant nor am I being paid to write this. I just loved my experience here that much.
So to summarise, Pizzeria Portas is a really good option for eating in Split, especially if you are in the mood for pizza. The food is great, the prices are reasonable, the staff are friendly, the waiting times aren’t bad, the location is convenient, and the setting is pretty. What more can you ask for?
Menu Options
The only food options in Pizzeria Portas are pizzas and salads. There are no pasta options or any other Italian cuisine foods other than pizza.
It is a pizza restaurant after all.
But there are 14 different pizza options to choose from, so you aren’t short of choice.
The prices range from €11-16 with Margherita on the lower end and pizzas with truffle cream on the higher end.

These are the pizza options in Pizzeria Portas as of my visit:
- Margherita (tomato sauce, mozzarella)
- Funghi (tomato sauce, mozzarella, mushrooms)
- Romana (tomato sauce, mozzarella, ham)
- Vegetariana (tomato sauce, mozzarella, zucchini, peppers, cherry tomatoes, corn)
- Capricciosa (tomato sauce, mozzarella, ham, mushrooms)
- Pepperoni (tomato sauce, mozzarella, Croatian spicy salami)
- Prosciutto (tomato sauce, mozzarella, prosciutto)
- Antonia (tomato sauce, mozzarella, shrimps, garlic)
- Istriana (tomato sauce, mozzarella, truffle cream, prosciutto)
- Quattro Formaggi (tomato sauce, mozzarella, gorgonzola, grana padona, edamer)
- Americana (tomato sauce, mozzarella, bacon, onion)
- Vesuvio (tomato sauce, mozzarella, Croatian spicy salami, mild peppers, sour cream)
- Spalato (tomato sauce, mozzarella, prosciutto, rocket salad, cherry tomatoes, grana padano)
- Portas (tomato sauce, mozzarella, ham, bacon, Croatian spicy salami, onion)
In terms of salads, you have Greek Salad and Season Salad, costing €12 and €7 respectively.
Personally, I don’t drink alcohol so I can’t report back on the alcoholic options available, but there was a menu for these too.
Tips For Eating At Pizzeria Portas
Like with any restaurant, there are some things that can be handy to know in advance. Here are some of my tips for eating at Pizzeria Portas:
- Eat outside: If the weather is nice, I definitely recommend eating outside. It might have a bit of a longer wait but look at the difference in setting from the outside tables to the inside tables. It’s a no-brainer if you ask me.

- You can drink tap water in Split: Tap water in Croatia is safe to drink, so if you are travelling on a budget, then it’s something to consider to save you buying a drink.
- There are no reservations: Unfortunately, it is not possible to reserve a table online or through Google. Perhaps if you are a large party or it’s a special occasion, you can phone them and try to make a reservation.
- Dinner in Croatia is around 8 pm: Locals in Croatia will have their dinner around 8, give or take an hour, so if you visit outside of this window, the restaurant will be less busy.
- They accept Croatian kuna: Before Croatia started using Euros, their currency was the Croatian kuna. Pizzeria Portas still accepts kuna as payment (in cash).
- Cash and card are fine: The restaurant accepts both cash and card payments, so don’t feel like you need to have one or the other. Both are fine.
- You can only tip by cash: In Croatia, tipping is not mandatory, but it is still a nice way to appreciate good service. If you choose to tip, you can only tip in cash, not by card.
Is Pizzeria Portas Vegetarian Friendly?
Yes, Pizzeria Portas is vegetarian-friendly, there are a few vegetarian options on the menu.
There is a pizza called Vegetariana which has tomato sauce, mozzarella, zucchini, peppers, cherry tomatoes, and corn. It is the most popular vegetarian choice, but there are some other options too.
If nothing else, you can never go wrong with a Margherita which is what I had at the restaurant and I can vouch for it being delicious.
Is Pizzeria Portas Vegan Friendly?
Pizzeria Portas is somewhat vegan-friendly.
There are no options on the menu which are explicitly vegan. There are some vegetarian, but no vegan options.
Reviews show that if you ask for a pizza without cheese, they will happily make it for you, but unfortunately, there is no option for vegan cheese.
So it is possible to eat at the restaurant as a vegan, but you will probably have more options in other places. That being said, Croatia isn’t as suited towards vegan diets as other countries.
Is Pizzeria Portas Good With Allergies?
Yes, Pizzeria Portas is good for people who have allergies.
They are happy to remove ingredients from pizzas on request.
For example, if you want the Spalato (tomato sauce, mozzarella, prosciutto, rocket salad, cherry tomatoes, grana padano) but you are allergic to tomato, they will happily make it without sauce and without the tomatoes.
As someone who has severe allergies, I know how awkward it can be to ask sometimes, but it’s no worries at this restaurant. It makes a change from other Italians I have eaten in where they get antsy about it, but you won’t have any problems here.
