My Top 3 Picks: Pompeii Tours from Rome
Best Pompeii Tours From Rome
Rome is a beautiful city, but a trip to Rome would not be complete without a day tour of Pompeii. It’s a little bit out of the way, so your tour will involve a bit of travelling but don’t worry, I’ve picked the 12 best Pompeii tours from Rome to make it as seamless as possible. The tours start and end in Rome, with a Pompeii visit in between!
1. Pompeii Tour from Rome with Amalfi Coast Drive
⭐RATING: 4.7 out of 5 Stars (3200+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 13 hours | 🧍 GROUP SIZE: Max 18 | 🌋 BOOK NOW
The best of the Pompeii tours from Rome is definitely the Pompeii Tour from Rome with Amalfi Coast Drive. It has nearly 3000 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐reviews. That’s an insanely high rating!
When I book a tour, I like to go with the “tried and tested” option. And this is the tour with the most number of reviews and highest rating by far!
Pros:
- 3000+ 5 star reviews
- Skip the line tickets
- Maximum group size of 18
- Explore the Amalfi Coast on top of Pompeii
- Flexible itinerary which changes throughout the year
- Walks Tours is my favourite tour company worldwide
- Free cancellation
- Infants under 2 are free (discounted price for up 2-14 year olds)
Cons:
- One of the most expensive tour options (but worth it IMO)
- Itinerary changes in winter so if you want to visit Positano, you need to go in summer

I’ll start by saying that this is one of the best tours I have ever taken anywhere in the world. I can’t recommend the Pompeii Tour from Rome with Amalfi Coast Drive enough.
Having a tour that combines both Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast all in one 13-hour tour is amazing. The private mini-bus departs from Rome in the early morning with up to 18 passengers, travelling in style to the ruins of Pompeii. My group only had around 12 which was a nice bonus.
In the company of a knowledgeable tour guide, you can explore the beautifully preserved ancient city of Pompeii and learn all about the terrifying eruption of Vesuvius from the place that it affected the most. After all, it was the ash of Vesuvius which Pompeii was buried under.
The tickets included in the tour also mean you get to skip the line. Personally, I hate waiting in queues, so I loved being able to just walk right past everyone. Because trust me, the queues get big.
As the sun reaches its peak for midday, you return to the tour bus, heading for the mesmerising Amalfi Coast. The bus stops along the way at prime photo spots making sure you can take plenty of Insta-worthy pictures, which I really appreciated as a travel blogger- I always need lots of pics for my posts.
When you reach the coast you’ll be given lots of free time to spend your day how you’d like to. I always like tours that give you some free time. As much as I love guides and being in a group, sometimes I just want to explore and Pompeii Tour from Rome with Amalfi Coast Drive allows that.
The tour guide gave recommendations. They recommended taking the opportunity to enjoy authentic southern Italian cuisine for lunch, do a spot of shopping in Positano and even take a dip in the Bay of Naples, but I didn’t bring my swimstuff. Don’t make the same mistake I did!
I have used Walks Tours for a number of tours all around the world and they have never disappointed. The company always want you to get the best experience for your money and so in this case, the itinerary may change from day to day to get the most efficient and best timetable.
For example, in peak season cruise ships dock early in the morning spilling thousands of passengers into Pompeii to explore. The tour company keeps tabs on the arrival times of these cruises and will sometimes swap your Amalfi Coast experience around with your Pompeii visit, making sure that you get to experience the ruins in the quieter afternoon.
In low season many shops and restaurants in Positano close, so the company may also arrange for you to visit other nearby towns which will provide you with an equally enjoyable experience. They really go above and beyond.
This careful planning makes this tour stand out from the rest and is one of the reasons it is at the top of my list.
Pompeii Tour from Rome with Amalfi Coast Drive allows you to tour two popular areas for a reasonable price and guarantees an unforgettable experience. You genuinely can’t go wrong with booking this tour. It’s my number one suggestion.
2. From Rome: Pompeii Tour with Naples or Positano Option
⭐RATING: 4.6 out of 5 Stars (2900+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 13 hours | 🧍 GROUP SIZE: Max 18 | 🌋 BOOK NOW
Another extremely highly rated Pompeii tour from Rome is the From Rome: Pompeii Tour with Naples or Positano Option tour.
As the name suggests you will also take a trip to Naples or Positano, depending on the time of year. It’s pretty cool to visit these on top of the amazing Pompeii.

For the Pompeii Tour with Naples or Positano Option, a private bus leaves Rome from a designated pick-up point early in the morning to beat the rush hour traffic with an archaeologist guide onboard who can tell you all about the city of Pompeii and how it came to be excavated.
Even though I hate early mornings, it was worth it to see the beauty of Pompeii. It’s a pinch-yourself moment walking around the streets.
The cost of this tour includes skip-the-line entry to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and a guided tour. But don’t worry, the guided tour isn’t a pain, there are plenty of opportunities to marvel at the excavated ruins.
What I like about this tour option is that it includes different activities depending on the time of year so be sure to check out what your itinerary would be when you planning your trip.
Summer Months: If you are travelling to Italy between April and November then with this tour you will get the opportunity to climb the mountain which destroyed the thriving Roman town – Vesuvius, taking in some stunning views of the Bay of Naples.
The bus will drive up the huge slope of Mount Vesuvius and then it is a short hike to get to the steaming crater. Although it might not be a far walk it’s recommended you wear some comfortable shoes as you will be on your feet for a lot of the day as it is!
On very rare occasions during the summer, the Vesuvius crater is off-limits and so the tour company will ensure that another equally enjoyable excursion to Naples or Positano is arranged.
Winter Months: In the months of November through to March, Mount Vesuvius is unfortunately closed to the public for safety reasons. Instead, you’ll be driven to the city of Positano, enjoying beautiful coastline views along your journey. Here, you’ll be allowed to spend some free time however you would like.
Whether you choose to visit in Summer or Winter, you are guaranteed to have a once-in-a-lifetime tour. Seeing Pompeii on top of Vesuvius or Positano is amazing.
From Rome: Pompeii Tour with Naples or Positano Option on top of what I have to say is very highly reviewed and promises to be a very enjoyable day trip.

Travelling by air-conditioned minibus, this option takes you off the beaten track with a local tour guide. Offering stops in the wonderful Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Positano, From Rome: Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Positano Day Trip is well worth your time.
On arriving at Pompeii, you’re allowed to breeze past the queues and gain instant access to explore.
You’ll be allowed to discover the Roman world for yourself, asking your guide questions about the most well-preserved town that archaeologists have ever uncovered. I love guides who are happy to answer questions, and I’m happy to say, that every guide I had in Pompeii was very friendly and answered everything.
And even though Pompeii is Pompeii and facts won’t change, each guide tells different stories and has different areas of expertise which means no two tours are the same, everyone has a unique Pompeii experience.
After Pompeii, you’ll be taken to Positano, a beautiful town with houses cascading down the hillside. With some free time to use up, you could visit some small boutique shops, sample the local liqueur or visit the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. I opted for the last option as I don’t drink, but if you do, there’s no better place for wine tasting!
After some free time and grabbing a bite to eat, you’ll be transported further down the coastline to the Amalfi Coast to enjoy the spectacular views of the villages which perch on the edge of the cliffs.
The day trip certainly crams in lots of activities and it is sure to feel long (but it is SO worth it!). As I said, I hate early mornings, but it’s so worth it for this day. Make sure to pack a sunhat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the hot sun in the summer months as you will spend a lot of time outside.
Want to see and experience as much of Italian culture and history as you can? From Rome: Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Positano Day Trip has it all packed into one. This option is a great one for anyone who wants to see as much of this part of Italy as possible.

Your guide will educate you on the history of the town on a leisurely stroll and there is plenty of time to ask as many questions as you can think of.
I can’t imagine visiting Pompeii without a guide. I’m by no means an expert on archaeological sites or the ancient ruins in Pompeii, so I would have no idea what I’m looking at without a guide! That being said, I do like to dander about for myself too.
